Cannot able to find the audio recording device in windows 7

I newly install the new operating system of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on Dell XPS 420 Quad Core processor. When I commence with the sound recorder it provide an error that audio recording tool cannot be originate. Microphone is inserted in face jack. This performed with windows Vista. I enabled the device to show disabled devices and show disconnected devices. Anyone have a suggestion for this post then assist me help? I also attempted to insert in the back side rear microphone jack. I scanned for hardware modification.
