Difference between Single Link DVI-D cable and Dual link DVI-D cable

I have bought a new computer in this I got DVI-D Single Link cable I don’t know for what work is this but one of my friend having DVI-D Dual link cable and he is saying that dual link is better than single link and its compatible with a types of monitor . I am in confusion that I just but new computer and my friends having computer which is two year old then ho e is this possible that I am getting DVI-D single link cable. If anybody having idea then please let me know and please tell me comparison between this two cables.

In this two cable one major difference that is :
    • In Single link DVI cable uppermost data rate counting 8b/10b overhead is 4.95Gbps @ 165MHz. if the 8b/10b overhead detached; the highest data rate is 3.96Gbps.
    • Dual link DVI cable highest data rate is restricted only by the bandwidth limits of the copper the DVI cable is made of.
    • Pixels per clock cycle: 1
    • In single link DVI cable @ 24 bits per pixel
    • In dual link DVI cable @ 48 bits per pixel

Re: Difference between Single Link DVI-D cable and Dual link DVI-D cable

I really don’t know what is the deference between these two cables but I have search that display modes which we get from single link DVI cable and dual link DVI cable are quite different it seems that dual layer is more beneficial than single link cable .
Example of single link DVI cable display modes
    • HDTV (1,920 × 1,080) @ 60 Hz with CVT-RB blanking (139 MHz)
    • UXGA (1,600 × 1,200) @ 60 Hz with GTF blanking (161 MHz)

Example of dual link DVI cable display modes
    • QXGA (2,048 × 1,536) @ 75 Hz with GTF blanking (2 × 170 MHz)
    • HDTV (1,920 × 1,080) @ 85 Hz with GTF blanking (2 × 126 MHz)

Re: Difference between Single Link DVI-D cable and Dual link DVI-D cable

Here I don’t know the difference between two cables but I have some specification of the single link DVI-D cable that is:
    • It has hot pluggable facility.
    • It has Video signal with Digital video stream.
    • Speed is WUXGA (1,920 × 1,200) @ 60 Hz.
    • Its restricted only by copper bandwidth restrictions.
    • Analog RGB video (−3 db at 400 MHz)..
    • Data signal are clock, RGB data and display data channel.
    • Protocol 3 × transition minimized differential signaling data and clock.

I don’t know details about difference but I can give you basic idea that what is DVI cable?
The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a video interface standard designed to offer especially high visual quality on digital display devices such as flat panel LCD computer displays and digital projectors. It was made by an industry consortium, the Digital Display Working Group to swap the "legacy analog technology" VGA connector standard. It is manufactured for carrying uncompressed digital video data to a display. It is partly compatible with the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) standard in digital mode (DVI-D), and VGA in analog mode.
