    Different models Spinpoint F1

This is not the first time a manufacturer of hard drives out a more comprehensive range of products based on the same technology. This approach allows us to offer products to meet all requests. Yet the originality of the new range of Samsung is both very wide range of capabilities offered (there is even a Spinpoint F1 160 GB), and adapting the size of the cache depending on the capacity and audience. The top models have a 32 MB cache, the midrange is equipped with 16 MB and the entry level of only 8 MB. The following are some different models Spinpoint F1.

The HD103UJ is the top model of the new line of Samsung Spinpoint F1. If all models have the same data density, the same rotational speed and the same interface (about 333 GB per platter, 7200 rpm SATA/300), only models 1000 GB and 750 GB have 32 MB cache. Samsung's documentation talks about an access time of 8.9 ms, which leads in practice to an average access time of 14.2 ms (rotational latency range). This is worse than Seagate (12.7 ms) or even Hitachi (13.8), but better than the 15.1 ms Caviar GP from Western Digital. If you want to do the Configuration test, the following are some recommended components:
    • Processors - 2x Intel Xeon Processor (Nocona core) 3.6 GHz, FSB800, 1 MB L2 Cache
    • Motherboard - Asus NCL-DS (Socket 604), Intel E7520 Chipset, BIOS 1005
    • RAM - Corsair CM72DD512AR-400 (DDR2-400 ECC, reg.) 2x 512 MB, CL3-3-3-10 Timings
    • System disk - Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB 120 GB, 7,200 rpm, 8 MB Cache, UltraATA/100
    • Storage Controllers - Intel 82801EB UltraATA/100 Controller (ICH5), Promise SATA 300TX4, ICP 5085BL 8-Port SAS/300
    • Network Controller - Broadcom BCM5721 On-Board Gigabit Ethernet NIC Charts, ATI RageXL, 8 MB

Unlike Seagate, Samsung has never really optimized the mechanics of its music, and is doing so again with a value very average, 1.5 ms slower than the 7200.11, and only 0.8 ms faster that Western Digital drives at 5400 rpm. A value that is identical to that of T166, the older generation. Still, if Samsung is coming up behind, it is not dropped by much. The flow curve of the Samsung F1 has a wave nature (in contrast to levels observed in the Seagate 7200.11 and the linearity of the flow of Caviar Green Power ) betraying the fact that the manufacturer has always adaptive format. The flow is still divided in half between the beginning and end of the disc. Contrary to 7200.11, the F1 takes a little longer with the interface S-ATA 300 MB / s up to 176 MB / s max when data is transferred from the 32MB of disk cache. This is a little less than what we observed on the Hitachi 7K1000, however, although this remains anecdotal point of view of performance in practice hard to recall.

It is here that the F1 has shown the most impressive and demonstrates the interest of a higher density, the only element which by its 2 main consequences (total capacity of a disc and higher average throughput) will allow HDDs persist long face SSD. The F1 makes it possible to exceed the already very impressive 7200.11, with no less than 11 MB / s better on the average throughput (ie 13% improvement) and nearly 120 MBps beginning of the disk! The Raptors with 87 MB / s are almost ridiculed at best ... As for the 100 Mb / s average throughput, it will be taken from the action at a density of 400 GB / platter, which could be announced next year!!

I would like to mount 2 drives in raid of 160 + GB for the system program. In your opinion what should we choose?
    • HITACHI 7K160 160 GB 8MB
    • WESTERN DIGITAL WD1600YS 160 GB 16 MB
    • SAMSUNG 160 GB 16 MB HD162GJ
16 MB vs. 8 MB is there a big difference? It seemed that the transition from 8 to 16MB did not bring a remarkable performance gain. so it is better to focus on access time? This makes the Hitachi 7K160 160 GB 8MB a good candidate for a drive system mounted in a raid with a decent price.
