    Bad Sectors on Hard Drive

I ran the chkdsk command (chkdsk C: /f /r) and it was saying that it was replacing/repairing bad sectors during the scanning process. After it was completed I ran chkdsk from the command prompt just to make sure the 68kb of bad sectors were no longer there. But it was still showing that they were there. Is there something else besides the chkdsk command that could be run to fix bad sectors on a HD? Thanks!

You can download a software called SpinRite that can be used for data recovery and drive maintenance to the latest file systems, operating systems, and hard drives. It runs MUCH faster than ever before, can help maintain all of your drives in tip top shape. Or you can try Norton Utilities. It does not remove bad sectors, it marks them, so no data can be written on it.

Re: Bad Sectors on Hard Drive

A bad sector is a sector on a computer's disk drive or flash memory that cannot be used due to permanent damage (or an OS inability to successfully access it), such as physical damage to the disk surface or failed flash memory transistors. It is usually detected by a disk utility software such as CHKDSK or SCANDISK on Microsoft systems, or badblocks on Unix-like systems. When found, these programs mark the sectors unusable (all file systems contain provision for bad-sector marks) and the operating system skips them in the future.
