The possibility that the driver you have installed may have some issue and this is the reason you are not able to process well for the change that is needed or required. So Look out for the driver installation that is done. It will be helpful for you to get the necessary changes to be worked. Look in the device manger and then rollback the driver. Now install the same.

The system compatibility may have been the cause or issue. It can be sorted out well by checking well for the change that is needed. All you need to do is to right click on the installer file and then process by installing the application under Windows XP under the properties tab. I hope this will help you well and make the changes to be processed. Do look out.

Make a clean boot process in order to work well or get sort of the compatibility issue. It will disable the active services and then process well. You need to choose Hide all Microsoft service from the selective startup tab by typing msconfig in the searchbox. It will be better for you and function accordingly that is required. Do look for the change and make it work.

Try to make the system to work under safe mode option and then make the installation of the driver for the printer device. I hope this should then be able to work. As safe mode is very normal and do not have much of the high advanced features enabled. Then restart the system and work well under normal mode. Check well. It will be better for you.
