Audio driver failure after installing new hard drive

I wanted to improve the performance of the computer and therefore I am using a gateway mx6421 laptop, installed a 7200rpm hitachi hd. I reinstalled the Windows and found that everything was working fine and it was giving me better performance then earlier but I got another problem with that. I am not able to get sound of my machine. Can you tell me the reason behind this and what should I do to get the audio back.

I think that your audio driver is corrupted and you should reinstall it. Uninstall the driver and reinstall that again. Reboot your system and check for the audio by playing any music file. If you get the sound then it is fine and if you are still having the issue then you can download the latest driver available on internet according to your laptop model. download that and install that. Upgrading the Audio driver has solved many such issues.

If it was your last OS Media Center then you can do the following.
    1. choose the property by right clicking on my computer icon.
    2. This will let you to the system property window.
    3. Select the hardware tab.
    4. choose the Device Manager.
    5. Go to SOUND VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS.
    6. Select your audio driver and right click. choose the driver tab.
    7. Click on the driver details and this will show you that where the existing working driver resides.
    8. Go get the file tiger and drop it into your new drive.

Hey, I was also having the same issue but I found that the driver does not work when you install it. You need to install the driver manually to make your driver work. You should open the driver installation wizard and do the have disk option and point to the driver. Install that manually and you l will find the audio working. It worked in case and I am quite sure that it will work in your case also.

You should download the latest driver and unzip that into your hard drive in one folder. After that follow the simple instruction.
    1. First of all right click MY COMPUTER
    2. Choose Properties
    3. Click HARDWARE tab
    4. Click DEVICE MANAGER tab
    5. Choose Sound, video and game controllers
    6. Right click the device in question
    7. Choose Update Driver

This will run the update wizard and ask you the question like "Can windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?"
    1. click on no and select next.
    2. cock on Click "Install from a list or specific location" and select next.
    3. Click the check box "Include this location in the search"
    4. browse the location where you have extracted that file.
    5. complete the wizard and you will update the driver manually.

You should go to device manager and click the Audio Media Controller. Select reinstall the driver and search for the driver on yourself. Now go to sound, Video and Game controllers. After this click on Intel and click on any of the audio controllers instead of Conexant Audio drivers. In my case I clicked on Intel 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller and this worked for me.
