It's supposed to limit the fatigue of the wrist (or arm for those who stick the palm of their hand on the mouse) and be more ergonomic in the sense of "comfort" of the term. I've never tried and therefore can not judge, but my impression is gained on one side that you lose the other (the thumb being heavily solicited, I do not know if it does not increase the risk of serious problems in the carpal tunnel).

Trackballs are very useful for people with reduced mobility. Now, I do not know if it's better than a touchpad, but it has the merit to exist for a very long time (since the time of the A500 at least). After I am not able to judge, I've never researched the subject and have never dared to buy one for fear of not being able to adapt myself, and that ultimately it does me unsuitable. The trackball, besides its small size, also offers the advantage of be much more ergonomic than the mouse when the screen size increases. Accuracy is the same, the MSD is effectively reduced, forearm resting flat on the work support. But I do not see the point of a wireless model: the trackball is, by definition, fixed ....

Hey since we are talking ergonomics ... Can not find that the apple trackpad are a bit tiring in the long run? I mean that the trackpad on my MacBook aluminum and it is absolutely intact after nearly two years (and that's good). But against the tip of my finger after an intense day ... Well I need a mouse to complete my job. I think the ground glass is a bit aggressive for the fingers to force (hence the sudden I can not imagine the textured plastic of some brands ...

There are a lot of motives to utilize ergonomic hardware. Comfortable keyboards and mice help lessen the jeopardy of RSI (repetitive strain injury), and well designed key layouts can also augment typing speeds.
