I have bought a couple of new Western Digital 2TB WD20EARS just before one week and i have noticed that one of it is WD20EARS-00J2GB0 and another one is WD20EARS-00MVWB0. There is only a small difference between the place of screws given on this both the drives. Still i would like to ask you guys that what are all the differences between both of these drives as i have just caught an external one but i need a help by performance wise.

The WD20EARS available in 3 versions:
    • 1st version: WD20EARS-00S8B1 = 4 500GB platters (launched in January 2009).
    • 2nd version: WD20EARS-00J2GB0 = 4 500GB platters (made since early April 2010 in Thailand and on the market since May 2010). The PCB is more compact than the WD20EARS-00S8B1 and design of the hard disk has been modified and approximates that of the 1 TB version. The firmware WD20EARS 00S8B1-and-WD20EARS 00J2GB0 is: 80.00A80 (like many other models of Western Digital hard disks).
    • 3rd version: WD20EARS-00MVWB0 = 3 trays 667Go (the production of this new model began at the end of May). The firmware is WD20EARS-00MVWB0: 50.0AB50.

Re: Western Digital Green 2TB WD20EARS-00J2GB0 vs 00MVWB0

There were a rumors about Western Digital that it will commercialize new Caviar Green hard drives with trays of 667 GB instead of 500 GB used currently. This has multiple implications. Firstly, in the same capacity, it uses fewer plates: three are enough for a 2 TB disk, cons of models with four 500 GB This allows both to optimize the costs of improving performance. According to preliminary tests, the new Caviar Green (WD20EARS-00J2GB0) reference thus provide a higher average rate of about 8% than the former (WD20EARS-00S8B1) about 90 MB / s against 84 MB / s.
