    Converting a RAID0 in RAID5

Currently I am having the MSI P35 with a ICH9R Sata-RAID controller in accordance with the 2 x Seagate 1TB in RAID0. The Intel Matrix storage manages displays one of the disks as conjugate. I have tried to do chkdsk, but the problem cannot be resolved. Hence I want to buy one more on terabyte disk a convert the RAID0 in a RAID5 with more than two disk. Is there any method to do it directly? In short I need information for Converting a RAID0 in RAID5

    Re: Converting a RAID0 in RAID5

Dell server running Windows SBS 2003. 3DD SATA2 160GB each. RAID Controller PERC 5 / I configured as RAID-5. The problem is that I want to transfer data to my server and keep them safe. So I opt for a RAID-5. When I look at disk management, I have a single basic disk 0 with 3 volumes: 133MB (C drive) 25GB NTFS (system), and (D 271.86 GB NTFS.
    1) For my 160 GB * 3 = 480 GB Now I have only 300. Where are the remaining 180 GB?
    2) The RAID-5 is it already implemented? And in this case, the 180 GB would be missing the redundancy of writing.
    3) No need to convert the disks to dynamic disks then? If I still need to make the problem is that I converted the entire disk and thus the same part (C drive) reserved for the system -> problem! ?
    4) If everything is OK I put all my data in D: and it works should work.
I try to put forward ideas but I am really reassured if a specialist gave me his opinion.

I have got the answer and will reply the way you have asked. First thing that you have asked 3x 160 Gio is in the case of RAID 0 (stripping said). Second thing is yes, the third hard drive used for parity. Third one there is no need for conversion, its hardware RAID, Windows does not see a single hard disk, and you do what you want. Yes, if everything goes right it will work.

    Re: Converting a RAID0 in RAID5

A RAID combines physical hard disks into a single logical unit by using either special hardware or software. Hardware RAID solutions can take a variety of styles such as construction on the motherboard, adding a card, or larger-scale NAS or SAN. Thus, the operating system sees each as a RAID disk and has no knowledge of its physical constituents. Raid software solutions are, in turn, generally implemented directly in the operating system.

There are three key concepts in RAID: The "mirroring" is to copy data to multiple disks, the striped volume, authorizes the division data through at least two discs, and error correction, where redundant data are stored in order to detect problems and possibly repair. Different RAID levels use one or more of these techniques, depending on system requirements.

RAID 5 is the best of both worlds. Performance with protection. RAID 5 beasts data and parity information across three or more disks. He has not spent a parity drive that contains all the information, but distributes data and parity blocks across all disks in the array. What the hell did you just say Shane? "To tell you the truth I honestly do not understand the inner workings of engineering.

RAID 0 is what is called RAID Representation. What you do is take two or more disks and "stupid" at the same time so that they act like a disk. "Striping" basically means that you format multiple hard drives at the same time as a great "virtual" disk drive on your system. " For example, if you take the four 250GB drives and RAID 0 them stupid, you have a 1TB RAID
