Though there are lost of brands of which you can buy an usb external hard drive. I am using both LaCie and OWC on my macbook and these both the hard drives are working just fine. I would suggest you to buy Firewire drive instead of storage drives as it performs better then the storage devices.

I would like to give some informations about an external drives as it basically has two types, One is an empty case and another one is a case that includes a pre-installed hard drive. second type of drives are more popular as you get it easily on any computer hardware shop. There are different medias by which you can connect your external drive with your computer such as USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, or External SATA, also referred to as eSATA.

I would recommend you to buy a FireWire external drive for your mac mini as it is preferred by most of the mac users. Actually every Macs have built-in FireWire support and it is even faster then an USB external drives. Mac has that support by which you can boot from an external FireWire hard drive enclosure. Firewire External Drives can work with the both PowerPC as well as Intel-based Macs. There are two formats of FireWire external drives namely FireWire 400 and FireWire 800.
