Different types of DVD standards

Hi,
I was just surfing around to buy a DVD writer for my daily data backup work. There are many traditional optical driver but the standards used by them confuses me. One type of DVD drive shows up burning of a 4GB DVD while other shows up 8GB. What does this indicates. I am aware of blur rays and high data storage capacity. But they are best for multimedia content. What but them normal data backup. What are the different standards used in DVD's.

If you are not aware then there are actually two main standards of a DVD RW which is indicated in the system of - and +. There is also a third standard, the DVD-RAM, but it is intended primarily for professional use and is not intended to base the general public.
