Windows Vista does not support all the models of the Canon printer. If the operating system does not supports the peripheral attached to it, then there is no use in trying to make the device detect on the system. Check if the model of the printer which you are using is supported by Windows Vista or not. To check if Windows Vista supports the printer which you are using, visit the official Microsoft website and then check for Windows Vista compatible device. If the device is listed then only do further troubleshooting otherwise no use in trying to make the device detect on the system.

Re: Canon MX310 printer not working in Windows Vista

Whenever any device is not getting detected on the computer, the first thing which the user should do is to check the connections between the computer and the printer. If the connection between the computer and the printer is not proper, then the communication between the computer and the printer will not be proper due to which the system will not detect the printer attached to it. Hence check the connection between the computer and the printer. To be sure if the connections are proper, remove the connecting wire between the computer and the wire and then connect it again properly. After redoing the connections again, check if the printer is getting detected or not.

Try doing a full power cycle and see if the system detects the printer or not. Sometimes the operating system is not able to detect the printer when it is connected to it due to some hardware and software conflict. To resolve this problem, you will have to do a full power cycle for the printer. To perform a full power cycle, follow the steps below :-
    1. Shut down the computer and the printer.
    2. Disconnect all the connections between the computer and the printer.
    3. Reconnect all the connections between the computer and the printer.
    4. Power on the computer and let it boot completely.
    5. Once the computer has fully booted, power on the printer and check if it gets detected.

There is a high possibility that the printer which you are using has developed some faults due to which it is not getting detected. If the printer itself is faulty then the system will not detect it. Get the printer checked by some technicians and be sure about what exactly the problem is. If the printer is faulty then there is no other option than to replace the printer. Change the connecting cable and port on which the printer is connected, if there is no fault found with the printer.

Re: Canon MX310 printer not working in Windows Vista

As you have upgraded the operating system from Windows XP to Windows Vista, you will also be required to upgrade the drivers installed for the printer. If the appropriate drivers for the certain device are missing then the device will not work properly. Drivers work as the mediator between the operating system and the device. Hence you will have to install appropriate drivers for the model of the printer which you are using and which is supported by Windows Vista. Go to device manager and located the installed printer. Now right click on the printer and select update drivers. After updating the driver check if the printer gets detected.
