What should the standard length of LAN cable be??

    Hello everyone.......
I want to connect a LAN(Local Area Network) to my system. So, I wanted to know that what is the standard length for a LAN cable as I do not have any knowledge related to this topic. If anyone knows what the length of an interrupt free LAN connection should be, please reply. One of my friends told me to use 30 meters of cable. Is it OK?? My operating system is Windows Vista Home edition.

There is no standard length as such for a LAN cable. It depends on the length of the network which you are going to setup. I have used a 40 meter wire to a switch for Ethernet behind my system from my router. This is of very low cost, but it has no power to boost. The problem comes only if you go over 100 meters, otherwise you dont even notice losing the signal or any interrupt.

The LAN cable, CAT5 UTP is good for setting up LAN networks. But, this is limited for a use till 100 meters. After that the signal begins to break and interrupts begin to clash between the signal, which slows the speed and causes inconvenience. In such cases, a signal repeater is used at various intervals that boosts up the signal and thus, giving a good speed.

Talking about the standards of LAN cables, it depends upon the place where you are setting up the network. If you are setting it up for a basic home or office environment, 40-50 meters are ok. If the length goes for more than 100 meters the length of wire increases. The more the length, the slower the network becomes. So, it is recommended for a large area, one should use either wireless connections or boosters with which the signal goes high.
