Dell cd drive stopped working

I recently purchased a Dell Studio 14 Laptop. All of a sudden my CD/DVD +R drive won't work. Reboot and on boot up it said Primary drive 1 not found, strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup utility. Even when I try to write any new disk it ejects the disk and tells me to put in a compatible disk. Why my dell cd drive had stopped working? Could it be the driver has been corrupted? Anyone else having this problem? I'm out of ideas, please help me.

Dell has a reputation for installing cheap low end components in their machines but most of all the CD/DvD drives are real crap. By right clicking My Computer and going to properties, you can access the System Properties window.

Have you tried changing what IDE port it's on if you have several? On the hardware tab, there should be a button for device manager. Locate your optical drive in the device manager and it should tell you whether or not it is working properly. You can also uninstall, reinstall, and upgrade the driver through the device manager.

These filter drivers sometimes have problems that can cause the CD or DVD drive to stop working correctly. It would be better if you replace your laptop. However, from the sound of things, you may have a hardware problem. The device entry for the CD or DVD drive in the Device Manager may show up with an error descriptor that reads "The device could not start."
