I have just brought a LG LCD monitor, 19 inch screen size, Resolution 1440x900 pixels and I have a DVD player, VCR and sky box connected together through a SCART. But what exactly is HDMI? should we be using it? how much is it?

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is an interface standard used for audiovisual equipment such as high-definition television and home theater systems. With 19 wires wrapped in a single cable that resembles a USB wire, HDMI is able to carry a bandwidth of 5 Gbps (gigabits per second). This is more than twice the bandwidth needed to transmit multi-channel audio and video, future-proofing HDMI for some time to come.
HDMI transfers uncompressed digital audio and video, and eliminates the losses associated with analog quality which means that image quality is of highest degree. The device is designed to receive the signal, eg HDTV, decodes the signal and then measuring the difference between the signal and its inverse (called differential). It also has the potential to support enhanced definition formats such as 480p, as well as the most common formats, such as PAL and NTSC.
HDMI eliminates the complexity of using several multiple cables, combining audio and video in one cable. Normally, the maximum length for a cable "standard" HDMI is about 15 meters, high performance cables are available and yet 15 meters (49.2 feet) or more is possible.
