the Gateway 556ge Sound card Support Intel High Definition (HD) Audio
The High Definition Audio from Intel, previously codenamed Azalia before its release, is an evolution of the AC97 since intends to represent the new standard for integrated sound that you will find on all motherboards based on Intel chipset, and in the future on all motherboards whatever the chipset manufacturer. so you might need the intel hd audio drivers

    1. On your Desktop screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.
    3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.
    4. On the Device Manager tab, locate the type of device for which you are installing a new driver. For example, Display Adapters lists video cards, and Sound, video, and game controllers lists sound cards.
    5. In the list of devices, double-click the device name, and then locate your specific device in the list. Click the device name.
    6. This generally gives you the manufacturer and model of the device, which should be enough to find the drivers you need.
    7. also from this list, you can update the driver by right clicking and choosing update drivers option
