Default printer changes to Deskjet

I have 1 HP LaserJet 1018 Printer and another HP Deskjet D2660 Printer on my computer. I have installed all the drivers that came with the printers. But the problem is that every time my default printer changes to HP Deskjet D2660, although I have set LaserJet as the default. Can you help me how can I stop default printer changing to Deskjet?

I think there is some virus activity that is running on your computer which is causing the problem. Why don't you run your antivirus software and see if that's the problem? I would recommend to use MalwareBytes or ComboFix which scans all types of malwares and removes from your computer.

Re: Default printer changes to Deskjet

Device Discovery is the small TSR which populates the icons in HP Director Or Printer Assistant when a new peripheral is added. It is not necessary for operation of the printer or any other device. It causes the win.ini file to be modified so that the Deskjet 3740 series is the default printer. To fix this:

Click Start, then Run and type regedit and click OK. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Under Printers, note down the DeviceOld registry key.

Now go to Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows. Make sure that the Device registry key matches the above DeviceOld value.

If not then do the changes and then close the Registry Editor.

Finally restart your computer for changes to take effect.

Re: Default printer changes to Deskjet

Some printers make themselves the default printer whether you like it or
not. To set the default printer in the registry, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor.
2. Look for:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
3. Click the following value:
Device=Printer1,winspool,LPT1:
4. On the Edit menu, click Modify, replace the first value (Printer1) with the name of the printer that you want to set as default, and then click OK.
5. Quit Registry Editor.
