sata II hard drive does not perform upto mark-speed related issues

I have recently purchased my new rig, where I ordered an Abit AB9 pro motherboard, a SATAII hard drive and a SATAII cable among other things, The problem is that whenever I try to pull any large data to copy to other location, data size about around 2 to 3 GB it takes very long time so i am thinking that there there would be some speed related issures with the SATA drive, what would be the problem, Please help me.

Are you pretty sure about the sata II is backwards compatible and both use the same cables, if you are not getting error message then you can assuem that your hard drive perfoms better or there would be any such programs, an not listing here any problem because the problem may be anything.

Don't worry, nothing runs at "SATAII" speeds thats just marketing and indicated a potential maximum bandwidth of 3GB/sec, Open Device Manager (its in the Control Panel) and then right-click on your hard drive (under Disk Drives). Click on "Policies" and make sure there are check marks next to
"Optimize for Performance", "Enable write caching on the disk", and "Enable advanced performance", then click OK.

It really sounds like the drive is connected to a USB1 rather than USB2 port. Perhaps the external enclosure contains a USB1 chip. I'd be chasing hardware rather than software reasons. You can use hdparm command. It provides a command line interface to various hard disk ioctls supported by the stock Linux ATA/IDE/SATA device driver subsystem.
