Sata hard drive data to SATA/RAID 5

Sponsored Links
Hi,

We have a very old IBM X-Series 100 server in our office which is out of warrenty and have lot of issues - So bought a new IBM X-3650.

Old server - 1 TB SATA hard drive (Commonly shared files - Rightb now usage is 595 GB)
New Server - Got 4 TB hard drive (Out of which 1 is hot spare, usable space 1.8 TB, no partition, RAID 5)

Now i need to transfer all my data in the old server to new server. I can reconfigure the delete all the arrays and reconfigure my RAID arrays.

Need advice on how i can transfer the data other than connect it to a switch? Using any software like Ghost or something else? I dont have a extra SATA port in new server.

Tks

Re: Sata hard drive data to SATA/RAID 5

If you select manual mode, there are more options available to you. Some of the things you will be able to do: click on the files u want moved and drag them 2 the slave not all files can be copied. if you want 2 move all get a program called mirror program. It copies everything os system all.
  • Select the partitioning and data transfer method
  • Define partition information on the new disk
  • Remove all information from the old disk
  • Create new partitions on the old disk

Re: Sata hard drive data to SATA/RAID 5

Thanks for the reply.

But i need to know if Ghost or any other program (I am not sure of the mirror program) would accomplsh my task.

i.e. Since i have 4 x 1 TB Hard drive for new server (3 HD = Data | 1.8 TB usable ; 1 HD = Hot spare)

Can i connect my old SATA hard drive to the Hot spare port and transfer data from the Old SATA to the 3 Newly RAID 5 configured HD using Ghost ?

Note: There is no data in 3 new HD. So i can reconfigure my Raid 5 once again.

Or is it possible to add the old 1 TB hard drive to the new (yet to be configured) set of HD's and stripe the volume w/o data loss?

Yes, you can use ghost and can also use one of these to clone that disk to the new one.

Drive Image
http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/
PowerQuest has clearly put a lot of effort into making Drive Image 2002 easy to use. When you launch the program, a straightforward wizard walks you through the process of either creating a backup of your hard drive or restoring it, detailing each step of the process.

Acronis TrueImage
http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/
Acronis TrueImage 6.0 has an interface that makes it an ideal solution for users with basic drive-imaging needs and a desire for simplicity. The wizard for backing up a hard drive is extremely intuitive; it lets you back up partitions of a hard drive to another partition on the same drive or to optical media. Unlike Drive Image and Ghost, TrueImage does not require exclusive access to the file system to make a copy of all files. And whereas other programs require you to reboot into DOS mode to complete most operations, TrueImage needs to leave Windows only to restore a hard drive.

Casper XP
is the next generation of Drive2Drive, designed exclusively for Windows XP and Windows 2000 systems.

Also vendors of hard disks have disk utilities and part of this package is a cloning utility and they are free.

Re: Sata hard drive data to SATA/RAID 5

Thanks for the links provided buddy. Will defenitely give it a shot.

One small question - Eventually i need to have the DATA HD's in Raid 5.

So, if i clone it using any of these softwares after configuring the HD as RAID 0, 1 or 5 from a Normal SATA HD, will i be able to retain the DATA after connecting back to the server?

First, if i configur Raid 0 or Raid 1 - After cloning, i will need to Redo the Raid 5 again. So i believe i will lose my data
Secondly, if i configure my HD to Raid 5 - After data transfer, if i connect it to server, will the data get striped between the other 2 HD's.

I have a small suggestion: Can i just buy a SATA to USB connector and transfer data

ThumbsUp Re: Sata hard drive data to SATA/RAID 5

Hi all,

Issue resolved.

Norton Ghost wasnt working. Acronis did the job for me.

1. Configured RAID 5 in new server
2. Connected old SATA HD to new server using SATA-USB convertor
3. Disk Cloned using Acronis
4. After booting to the desktop, Extended the partition in New Server

Thanks for your posts.
