What is the Difference Between Smart UPS and Standard Ups

Hello , in Our Aree , we Have a Lots of Power Shortage problem, So i was thinking of purchasing Ups ,But Got Confused Between the Smart Ups and Regular/Standard Ups, Can you Tell me What is the Difference Between the Smart Ups and Standard/regular Ups ? , What are the Other Things that We Should Lookout for in a perfect Ups, Please Give Some good Suggestion , Thanks in advance

Re: What is the Difference Between Smart UPS and Standard Ups

The term of protection provided by an electrical inverter is expressed in VA (Volt-Ampere). It is generally considered that protection for a power corresponding to a power outage of 10 minutes, it is necessary to have an inverter with a capacity equal to the power of all equipment connected to the UPS multiplied by a coefficient 1 6.

When choosing an inverter, it is also important to check the number of electrical outlets they own. Smart UPS products usually come with the capability to gracefully shut your computer down in the event of a power failure automatically.

Finally, the inverter may have a connection (USB, network, parallel, etc..) To connect to the central unit to allow ordering its termination in the event of prolonged power outage and back up all work underway.

It is noted that the inverters do not protect the telephone connections, and a computer connected to an inverter and a modem may have its components damaged if lightning hits the telephone line.

Re: What is the Difference Between Smart UPS and Standard Ups

Back-UPS is whats called an "offline" UPS - it means that its not doing anything much until theres a powercut - when the mains fails, a relay closes, the rectifier based battery charger reverses to become a basic squarewave inverter that creates a pseudo-sinewave output running from battery power to supply your computer.

    Pro:
    cheap battery backup.

    Con:
minimal protection from spikes & power transmitted RFI.
no protection from brownouts or surges
50-100ms break in power during the switch between mains and battery

Smart-UPS uses "line-interactive" technology - it still means there is a relay in the circuit, so you still get a small break in power supply, but a Smart-UPS also incorporates a transformer that gives additional filtering for mains interference such as spikes & RFI, and it also can give boost/reduce by automatically tapping or removing another coil on the transformer to reduce the impact of brownouts or surges. They also give a sinewave output rather than squarewave.

Smart-UPS is by far the better choice of the two, but if you want full protection, you need to check out APC's "online" type UPS. More expensive, but they synthetically regenerate the mains sinewave giving you total isolation.

Re: What is the Difference Between Smart UPS and Standard Ups

generally There Are three types of inverters/ups
    • UPS called as "Off-Line" are connected via an electrical relay. In normal operation, the electrical voltage is used to recharge the batteries. When the voltage goes beyond a certain threshold (minimum and maximum), the relay opens and the voltage is recreated from the stored energy in the battery. Given the time of opening and closing of the relay, this type of UPS does not protect against micro-cuts.
    • UPS called as "On-Line" are connected in series and continuously regulate the voltage.
    • UPS called as "Line Interactive" are part of a hybrid technology. Indeed, the line interactive UPS are connected in parallel via a relay but has a micro-processor monitoring the voltage continuously. In case of low voltage drop and micro-cuts, the inverter can inject a voltage compensatory. In case of failure against total, the UPS will operate as an offline UPS.

The Smart-UPS series has the ability to buck (lower) or boost (raise) the input voltage over a fairly wide range, without going to batteries.

An offline UPS causes always a micro surger, but the power of the PC is capable of absorbing this effect . If you want to avoid micro-cuts you have to go on the UPS that line-interactive, or better online alternative also called as smart ups . But then the budget will be little higher. That said there are good line-interactive today at a price where before we had the simple offline ...
