Try this 5M USB Power Boost Extension Cable : Works beautifully with Mac OS X, at full USB 2 speed. It has Super fast data transfer, it extends the distance of a USB by 5 meters and compatible with USB 1.1 port and USB 2.0 port,No external power required.

You can also get this work via new USB power, it will not create redundancy . A bad cable may cause the Laptop to intermittently cut out due to the Hard drive drawing too much power. My suggestion to overcome this problem you should try USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable.
