usb port not safely removed

I inadvertently didn't safely remove a scanner from the usb port and now the port is now working, the scanner isn't recognised on any other port, AND the usb port is lit up all the time and the processor has slowed down and is grinding in the background all the time. HELP! please, just a brand new pc. thanks

first turn off your scanner then turn on again and try to connect it ..hope that will work...
