Re: Laptop Fan Problem

It could be the fan is malfunctioning. A loose fan motor assembly. If you can open the laptop, you can clearly analyse the problem. But if not, go to a Certified Service Center.

Re: Laptop Fan Problem

Try another monitoring utility. Download MobileMeter and see what that says.

To enable Intel SpeedStep, set the power scheme in Windows XP to Portable/Laptop. I am not too familiar with GNOME, so you will have to look around in the settings in Ubuntu. Make sure ACPI thermal management or processor throttling is enabled.

Re: Laptop Fan Problem

One way to tell if the fan is running is to do the following.

1) open your notebook to a 90* angle.
2) plug in the AC Adapter.
3) while watching the fan press the power button. On boot the fan should always power up for a couple seconds to test.

If it spins then your fan is working, but I suggest you update your BIOS. The most recent BIOS update adjusts the fan algorithms.

However if it isn't running goto the link below... follow the instructions until you are able to take off the keyboard, then check and make sure the fan is plugged in.... The connector is located below the power button connector...
