SONY DVD-RW doesnt read DVD CDs

i have been using this sony dvd-rewriter from last 8 months, now it is not reading DVD cds, what could be issue with it.
normal cds are readable as well as writable.

after contacting sony website they replied with no product production from there side.
is this a duplicate sony dvd writer company?

Go to your run command and type (start.....Run.....)
type gpedit.msc
Go to User configuration/Administrative templates/Windows components/Windows explorer
On the right pane, double click on "Remove CD burning features" tick the enabled button, then OK.
Reboot or logoff/logon to apply.

If your vista version does not have the gpedit function, do the following.
Open regedit, go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane, if it does not already exist, create a new 32-bit DWORD value. Name the new value as NoCDBurning, and assign the value data to 1.
Reboot or logoff/logon to apply.

Test the drive in another computer, that is the only chance to see if the drive is damaged or not!

It may simply be dirt on the laser / lens, get a cd cleaning kit and give it a go. If that doesn't work, ditch it !

Please use lens cleaner to clean it. If it does not still work, replace the drive.

It looks like the drive is dead. Check it out in another computer, change cable, try another power connection, all these things can be responsible, even when they worked before. This is most likely a hardware problem.
