Setup crashes while installing 320 GB Hard Disk

I got a new hard drive, 320gb IDE and i have set the jumpers to master but when I put it in and turn the computer on it gets as far as the ASUS K8VMX Startup screen, the one where it says in the corner "Press DEL to run Setup" and it crashes basically. I can press DEL if I do it straight away although this doesn' t take me to the Setup screen and just to the screen before the setup one. Then it crashes there.

The worst part about installing hard drives is setting the jumpers on the drive so that it works correctly with your current hardware. IDE hard drives have settings for master, slave and cable select. This is because, for an IDE drive, it matters. For Serial ATA drives (SATA), you don’t need to worry about jumpers at all.
