Need to decode AC3/DTS using Xonar?

I have PS3 and 360 which currently shares one toslink input of my receiver using a toslink switcher. I wanted to decode the sound coming from PS3 and 360 by using Asus Xonar d2X. The current quality of the sound is good but i know my Xonar would be far better DACS (or better wot-nots).

Till now, I have connected the toslink to the Spdif input of my Xonar so that my Xonar can decode the sound and forward them to my analogue speakers. When i enable spdif-in in recording device, I can experience the proper sound . Also when i use graphedit to link or capture device (Spdif in)/Directshow filter (Ac3filter or Ffdshow Filter)/Output Device (Xonar Speakers) - and activate the link, it plays PCM audio. But when it comes to decoding AC3 or DTS bitstreams, I can just hear the noise.

How do I decode AC3/DTS bitstreams?

Re: Need to decode audio using Xonar

This feature of decoding the sound(audio) i.e AC3/DTS bitstream using Asus Xonar d2X is planned. But it is not implemented right now.
Many people are having the same problem.
I think it should be implemented soon...

    You can try this:

    >>>If the AC3 source is from something with an RF AC3 output (like a LaserDisc player), you will need an RF demodulator to convert the RF-modulated AC3 to SPDIF coax or optical (TosLink).
The least expensive one available is the Yamaha APD-1

    >>>Now, you need to capture the SPDIF stream into the computer.
There are a few relatively inexpensive sound cards that can do this.
After you install one of the soundcards, you will run a professional sound editor (CoolEdit Pro or Sound Forge) and set the input the the SPDIF connector on the sound card, and begin recording.
However, the sound editor application knows NOTHING about IEC61937 non-PCM datastreams, and will think that what you've captured is PCM audio. When you play it back, it will sound like white noise.

    >>>Save that white noise as a .wav file, and run BeSplit on it with a type of ddwav. BeSplit will un-encapsulate the SPDIF framing from the file and will leave you with an .ac3 file.

That will get your AC3 audio captured digitally into the computer.

Re: Need to decode AC3/DTS using Xonar?

Some of the sound cards required that can do this:

    - M-Audio/Midiman Audiophile 2496
    - AudioTrak Prodigy 7.1
    - Several other professional-level sound cards.
    - The SoundBlaster Audigy/Audigy2 will NOT work.
It post-processes SPDIF input streams, resulting in non-exact captures of the digital audio. While this still works for IEC60958 SPDIF PCM audio streams, it renders IEC61937 non-PCM datastreams useless.
