    Sony BDU-X10S BD-ROM Drive

Sony Electronics Ltd today unveil its first internal Blu-ray Disc (BD) ROM Drive (BDU-X10S) for the computer aftermarket.

The new BDU-X10S offers consumers an affordable option to upgrade their desktop to a Blu-ray player, which can also play DVDs and CDs. "PC-based DVD-ROM drives helped accelerate mass DVD adoption, primarily because they were the least costly way to experience the technology," said Wolfgang Schlichting, research director, removable storage at IDC. "Similarly, we expect sub-US$200 PC-based BD-ROM drives to be a driver for cost conscious consumers to experience Blu-ray Disc high-definition video technology."

BDU-X10S now comes bundled with the CyberLink's PowerDVD BD Edition software for playback of commercial movie titles, recorded Blu-ray Disc home videos, DVD-ROMs and CD-ROMs. It also supports playback of recorded Blu-ray Discs in MPEG-2 or H.264 format, standard DVD-Video discs or recorded DVDs encoded with MPEG-2 or AVCHD formats. The internal drive allows fast and easy transfer of data or videos through its high-speed Serial ATA (SATA) interface. Its standard 5.25-inch form factor enables easy installation in desktop PCs running Microsoft Windows VistaTM or Windows XP operating systems and is an ideal replacement for an existing DVD-ROM drive.

Sony's BD/DVD/CD rewritable drives are sold directly through Sony Electronics (S) Pte Ltd's appointed authorised dealers nationwide

    Re: Sony BDU-X10S BD-ROM Drive

Hello, I found on the net while searching for it review that the drive also supports reading of CD-R/RW, DVD±DVD to include DL media. Reading of BD media though is the most important feature of the Sony BDU-X10S and the drive was very consistent over all the discs we tested posting steady 2x read speeds. The drive has native SATA connections and worked without a hitch in Windows Vista. The Sony BDU-X10S has a solid feel and good build quality; during normal operation the drive was surprisingly quiet.

    Re: Sony BDU-X10S BD-ROM Drive

The drive requires at least a 3.4GHz Pentium D processor to operate correctly, and Sony recommends a 2.4GHz Core Duo or higher for optimal performance. Other requirements include at least 512MB of memory, a High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)-compliant display to view protected Blu-ray content, a 256MB graphics engine with HDCP support, and any version of Windows Vista or Windows XP with SP2. The BDU-X10S reads CD media at 24x and DVD media at 8x, but Blu-ray media is still limited to 2x read speeds.Once you've cracked the case on your PC, installation is a snap. The BDU-X10S can be installed vertically or horizontally depending on your chassis configuration. Simply slide the drive into an open bay, attach the SATA cable and SATA power cable, secure the drive with screws, and button up the case. It took less than five minutes to install the drive on a Windows Vista Home Premium system, and Windows recognized the device immediately. Next, we installed the Cyberlink player software to see how the Blu-ray version of BBC Video's Planet Earth looked in high definition.
