Exclamation drive 2 not found... DARN!

hey everyone!

i got this problem that im unable to solve. maybe one of you computer experts can help me out a little. you see, normally i fix everything on my computer, just by takin the time for it and google alot. this problem, however, is about to get the best of me.

here's my problem:
al of a sudden, my cd/dvd drive is out of order. really, all of a sudden... now, i don;t use my cd drive all that much, so maybe it was going on a little while, but i never made any interior hardware modifications or install anything big.

when i boot the pc, it says this exactly:

drive 2 not found: parallel ATA, PATA-0 (pri ide master)

and then the press f1 or f2 option, i bet you know what i mean.

at first i thought it was just a puny little virus, that i just had to knock out of my system, while i drank my morning coffee. sadly, i was wrong. it;s 11.30 pm right now, and im writing my first "please help me, dear god, i beg of you, please help me-post" cause i just ccant seem to find a solution...

other people posted about this problem, but they just dont have the same circumstances like me. for instance: i didnt moved my pc, not even an inch... i never replaced my drives, i dont have any virusses, i havent bought any new hardware whatsoever! i even didnt do anything mayor in the last couple of months. so it's not the cables that are a little loose, and it's not the driver who;s giving me such a hard time...

my cd drive wont show up on my computer or the driver list. it seems he's not even there... i know the driver itself isnt damaged because he popped out one moment and i could use it, but the following moment i booted, it was broken again...

can anyone, please, help me a little?
there must be someone who knows how to fix this, most iritating problem...
i hope to here from you guys!

good night to all...
bye!!!
Lou

Re: drive 2 not found... DARN!

Fix for missing DVD/CD drives.

Create a text file with NOTEPAD containing the following data exactly as below and name it FIXCD.REG
You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : fixcd.reg
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be fixcd.reg.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result

Double click on the file and say yes to the merge into registry question.

Use text after this line, contents of FIXCD.REG
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

Re: drive 2 not found... DARN!

first check in your bios for detection of your optical drive tyhat not detecting in windows
1 if in bios drive get detected then problem is in your windows
2. if in bios drive not get detected then problem is in your hardware
so check your connection ,power supply

Take anti static precautions. Then check that you have not disturbed the IDE cables inside your box. Gently remove the cables from motherboard and the back of the drives and replace.Take great care as it can be very easy to bend a pin on a hard drive connector.Next step would be to replace both IDE ribbon cables. Then replace the BIOS battery. Hope it may help you to resolve your problem.

Re: drive 2 not found... DARN!

This may be a bad hard disk issue...
Go to Device manager and expand the the disk option. Check there. Is your driver listed? If not then go to BIOS and disable the S.M.A.R.T capability and try again? Again not listed... then your disk has died...!
AN ADVICE : "Post only your problem and not all of your stories..." That irritates people and many won't reply if there is a huge boring story..."

All the best!

Re: drive 2 not found... DARN!

This tweak will restore your missing CD-drive after a reboot.

Follow the steps below :

Click Start Menu

Select Run

Type "Regedit" and click OK

Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]

Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.

Exit Registry

Reboot

Re: drive 2 not found... DARN!

nice!
Thanks for the replies. i tried them all, and it got me a little further.
now what happend, was that before windows was loaded, the drive worked, well i could open it and shut it.
after windows was loaded everything died again... so i geuss we can say the problem is in windows xp...
that fixcd.reg didnt seem to change so much...

but how can my drive suddenly not work anymore? and how can he malfunction when there is no virus present?

thanks alot guys!

add:
i dont get the drive 2 not found anymore. but the cd drive is still not showing up in my computer or the driver manager

Re: drive 2 not found... DARN!

hey again!
If yours is a IDE hard disk try changing the jumpers. The jumpers settings play a vital role in making your hard drive master/slave. If the jumpers of two devices [in your case ur 2nd hard disk and cd-rom are configured same, then it will make either one device or both to not function...
All the best!
