External hdd not working with XP but works with Vista!

i bought a external hdd it worked fine while my pc was vissta then i installed xp and took vista off and the external hdd wont work on any xp computer and i need whats on urgently so i dont wanna reformat it.

it says its there but it wont read the files or let be coppy them

can some one help please??

ive thrown away the box but kept everything in but i cant remember the moddle of it all i know is its half a terrabite hdd and its made by seagate.

Well assuming that the drive still works on the XP machine i would highly recommend you use that machine to access the data that you desire and burn it to DVD's so that you have a backup copy and you can use it in your vista machine. Its possible that your only course of action may be to format the drive and start fresh so that it works both in the XP and Vista machines.

check hdd with partition magic for error check for disk format support may be that cause problem .

If you only use it on XP machines, be sure to format it as NTFS.

Also you can try updating the latest USB driver for XP.
