cant' read cd-rom

hi,
i have serious problem where, my drive cannot read or write any form of CD. Not only the ones I burnt but even other cd's as well. I tried many, still nothing.
Device Manager reports: "This device is working properly".
I downloaded and installed the latest firmware for this drive.
I renamed C:\Windows\Inf\Mscdrom.inf and then extracted the original mscdrom.inf from the .cab files to this same location.
Still no luck. Any ideas?

Try removing the IDE cables and boot the PC up with only the power connected to the drive - now try a CD audio or data and read what happens with the LED's.

By testing the LED's you can figure out if the drive is faulty or not

Do you have antivirus installed and well updated?? ,some times this occurs due to virus . operating system get collapse so its not possible for operating system to work in proper manner so check for virus.
