    • Right-click an open area on the desktop, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
    • Click Browse.
    • Locate the program or file to which you want to create a shortcut, click the program or file, click Open, and then click Next.
    • Type a name for the shortcut. If a Finish button appears at the bottom of the dialog box, click it. If a Next button appears at the bottom of the dialog box, click it, click the icon you want to use for the shortcut, and then click Finish.

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then right-click the program you want to create the shortcut to.
    2. Click Create Shortcut.
    3. The shortcut is now at the end of the Programs list. For example, if you created a shortcut to Microsoft Word, to find that program, click Start, and then point to Programs. You will find the shortcut, named "Microsoft Word (2)" (without the quotation marks), at the bottom of the Program list.
    4. Drag the shortcut to the Desktop.

The previous answers show how to do this for items other than My Computer.
I can do Word, Excel, PhotoShop, etc. I want to recreate My Computer. How can we find the "program" to display that will be labeled My Computer, please?

    Thank you.

It’s very simple to take my computer shortcut back to the desktop, if you have deleted that by mistake. If you want to do that then just right click on your desktop and then select properties. This will open the property box for your computer with tabs. Select Desktop tab and from the bottom select Customize Desktop. From here, you will be able to check the checkbox for my computer and then press OK. You can also do the additional tasks from here like changing the default icon for my computer.
