New storage approach for Japanese Buffalo, which this week announced the release of the next LS-WSS240GL/R1, its first network storage server using a duo of DSS. While the NAS (Network Attached Storage) usually rely on magnetic hard drives, Buffalo retains two Flash memory devices to 120 GB each. These can be configured in RAID 1 to ensure data redundancy.
To the extent that the performance will be penalized by both interfaces (Ethernet and USB), Buffalo retains the argument of silence as the main motivation for the design of the NAS Flash memory and advance noise insignificant, for this case no fan.
Compatible with the memorandum DLNA, the LS-WSS240GL/R1 allows access to files it hosts via a Web interface, supports Time Machine feature in Mac OS X. It also features a USB host port, which will automatically download the contents of a USB key or a camera. The NAS DSS should be launched in Japan during the month of December at a price of 106,000 yen, or approximately 870 euros. For now, the manufacturer does not specify whether it intends to export the LS-WSS240GL/R1 to Europe.
