Sony recalls 35000 Lithium-ion laptop batteries

Sony the worlds leading manufacturers of electronics recalling 35,000 Sony battery packs after reports that some overheated. The recall affects batteries in some Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba and Dell laptop models sold between 2004 and 2006.

And the reason is what you would expect. It seems the Lithium-ion batteries have the tendency to overheat, catch on fire and pose a burn hazard to people. Apparently, 19 people have already reported problems with overheating. 17 reports involved actual flames and 2 people received mild burns from the faulty batteries.

The US Consumer Products Safety Commission says people should take the battery out of their laptop immediately and contact the manufacturer to request a replacement.the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 35,000 laptop batteries manufactured by Sony.

Details, including laptop model numbers, are due to be posted on the commission's Web site, www.cpsc.gov.

While the recall is merely voluntary at the moment, it wouldn’t hurt to give the list of affected laptops a good perusal, which includes HP, Compaq, Dell and Toshiba laptops.

This pales in comparison to the recall of more than 10 million of a different model of Sony batteries in 2006 and 2007. That affected almost every major PC manufacturer.
