How To Activate the Microphone in Windows

The headphones and microphone plug into the back of the sound card.

Steps for plugging in the headphones and microphone:

    1. First look at the back of the computer. Then locate the sound card, it's the one with the green and red holes.
    2. Then take the microphone plug and plug it into the red hole. The microphone plug will probably be either red or grey.
    3. Next take the headphone plug and plug it into the green hole. The headphone plug will probably be either black or green.

How do I turn on the microphone in Windows 9x and 2000?
A: The Windows Volume Control can be used to adjust the microphone settings. Follow these simple steps for activating the microphone.

Steps for turning on the microphone:

1.Right-click the Volume Control icon on the Windows task bar (far right, next to the clock) and choose Open Volume Controls from the menu. If the Volume Control icon is not visible on your Windows task bar, then click the Start button, choose Run..., type SNDVOL32.EXE and click the OK button.

When the Volume Control window appears, click the Options menu.

From the Options menu select Properties.

When the Properties window appears, make sure that Microphone is ticked in the 'Show the following volume controls' section. Click the OK button.

The window should then disappear and you will then see the volume control window again. On the right side of that screen should be the microphone volume control, if the microphone is muted click the box to turn the mute off. Now the microphone should work normally.
