See the work around given in this similar threads: usbstor.sys is missing or corrupt
http://forums.techarena.in/window-2000-help/867907.htm
usbntmap.sys is with most other usb related files in the "cab" files in the
Win9x folder on the Win Me CD and/or in a sub-folder of Windows\Options and
not directly visible in Explorer. Look for the folder containing the file
BASE2.CAB. When the installer asks for files point it towards the folder
containing the cab files.
See MS KB 265371 - "How to Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows
Me" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=265371) for details of how to
manually
extract files from the cab set. Alternatively use MSConfig |
General | Extract File... and follow the prompts to extract a new copy of
the
required files to your windows\system32\drivers folder . Most USB related
files can be found in BASE2.CAB although some are located in other cabs.
Alternatively you could visit
http://www.usb-drivers.com/drivers/63/63237.htm
and download usb-WinMe.exe which contains WinMe's usb related files.
Extract
the files you want and put them in windows\system32\drivers.
Please don't install Windows ME files found on web sites on Windows ME systems, when the files are already on your system, just not where you can find them. You may not be getting the correct files.
Windows ME comes with full support for Thumb and USB type of drives. The problem is, that some OEM manufactures in building their master Installed copy of Windows ME did not have any such devices to test with and did not "install" them in their build. So users find these files missing. They are there in the System CAB files. They just need to be extracted and installed.
Do not plug the USB Thumb drive in now. Keep it out of the machine. If you have tried to plug it in, reboot the system.
First do a Start - Search and search for USBSTOR.INF
If found, skip the following instructions for extracting a copy of it........
IF search does not find USBSTOR.INF, you will have to EXTRACT a copy of it.
Use My Computer to browse to the following folder
C:\Windows\Options\Install\PRECOPY1.CAB
and in it locate the file USBSTOR.INF and then right click on it and in the options list select the EXTRACT option.
This will ask you where you want to extract a copy to. Navigate to the C:\Windows\INF folder and store it in that folder.
..... Skip to here .....
Now search for the USBSTOR.INF again and when you find it, right click on it, and in the options list, select the Install option.
If it can not find one of the files and asks for it, use the Browse button to point to the C:\Windows\OPTIONS\INSTALL folder and try again. It should only take a few seconds to install the USB drive support.
Now reboot the system again to complete the install of the USB drive support. When done, plug your USB Thumb drive into a USB plug on the system. After a few seconds, this should cause Windows PnP to see the device and search for its drivers. This might take about two minutes to complete. Again, if it asks for files, use browse to point it to the C:\Windows\Options\Install folder again.
When done, a new icon will appear in the SysTray next to the time. This icon is used to tell you that a USB storage device of some kind is plugged into the system. Before unplugging any of these USB devices you should click on this icon and tell it which storage device you want to remove and then unplug it after it tells you it is OK to do so.
With the device plugged in, you can now go to MY Computer and it will display a drive icon with a drive letter.
