BSOD and freezing pc could be hardware or software problem

I have installed Windows XP on my system. Now a days it gets sometimes BSOD's while other times it simply freezes. Can it be hardware problem or software problem?

If it happens while opening certain programs such as any browsers or Windows Explorer then it could be a hardware problem like hard disk or RAM failure. In that case you need to replace those parts. Otherwise, if you are confirmed that its not hardware failure than update your drivers like for graphics card, sound card and may be the BIOS also.

Also it could be temperature issue. Provide some more fans to your peripherals such as processor, graphics card, etc or move your computer to cooler area so that it doesn't get heated so fast.
