Is it mandatory to have PSU for video card

I want to ask a simple question to all of you. I am a bit confused and need your help. My question is that is it mandatory to have a PSU for your video card. I mean why the card require extra power supply? Are there any cards available which do not require extra power supply?

Basically its not mandatory to have extra power for all video cards. There are some video cards that don't require extra power but it is said that powered Video cards are better because as it has its own power supply, there will not be extra load on motherboard and its heat sink.

Hey my friend has Geforce 8500 GT and if I am not wrong then he don't use any power supply unit for specially this card. So I don't think that all the card needed extra power.

Ok then but if we use the same power supply unit for the computer as well as for video card then don't you think that the psu will die sooner or later?

It completely depends on your psu as to how much load it can carry. If you are using a good psu which handle both of them then there should not be any problem.

This is what I feel. Do correct me if I am wrong.
