One of the biggest problems for many who want a 5.1 surround sound system in their home are the wires that are needed for the speakers. JBL has announced a new product that will make any loudspeaker wireless called the WEM-1.

The system has an operating range of up to 70' and has a variety of connection options including line in and speaker level outputs accommodating a wide range of audio and AV source inputs. The wireless device also has a subwoofer output.

It's not exactly the first to turn any old speakers into wireless ones, but any attempt to cut down on wire clutter is alright in our book, and JBL is now doing its part with its new On Air WEM-1 wireless expansion module. As you can see above, this one consists of a transmitter module that connects to the audio source of your choice, and a receiver / amplifier that connects to a pair of speakers (it's apparently "tailored for use with select JBL loudspeakers," though it seems you can connect anything you like).

The amp/receiver also has a local input that allows the direct connection of a portable device or other audio source. The JBL On Air WEM-1 Wireless Expansion Module will be available in September 2008 for $359.
