Error E / S with external hard drive

Greetings. Recently I purchased a hard drive Maxtor Basics 500GB 3.5" with the intention of passing information from a laptop to a desktop PC that I have in different locations. By connecting to portable everything was fine and copied the information without the HDD problem, but when connected to the PC table, Window XP recognizes it and install drivers plug'n'play apparently without problem, but while copying information, it gives me an error message I / O. I do not know what the problem because the OS on both PC is the same. Anybody can help me?

the file format is .. FAT 32 O NTFS? 32 OR FAT NTFS? if FAT 32 and trying to pass large files will give you problems, should be in NTFS ..

The truth is that I do not know if NTFS and FAT or what is worse ... I do not know how to find out .. Where what I look?
