How to install Hard Drive?

I am upgrading the hard drive in my computer from 40 GB to 80 GB. I have a Seagate 160 GB external drive. What do I need to do to save all of my data and info from my old drive and transfer it to my new drive. Will I have to re-install my old XP operating system or can I just back up everything on the Seagate and then transfer over to the new drive once it's installed?

I have to install a new hard drive but i do not have the windows disk to do this how else can i do it i tried doing a back up disk but got errors computer did not come with software when i bought it is this even possible?
