How to use Windows 8 Storage Space to Protect your Data effectively

Windows 8 is yet under development. But there are some features which cannot be neglected. Windows 8 Consumer Preview can give you a glimpse of new interface. Microsoft has done quiet major changes modifying Windows completely. They had removed the traditional desktop and added a Metro UI which provides you a better interface. You can arrange your applications and documents as blocks on the screen. Microsoft on the same hand has kept something mind to deal with Data security. Windows is widely used operating system. Also on the same hand it is the most vulnerable. There are ample of security threats available for Windows. And as the time goes on, hardware failure is also waiting. Now under those circumstances how will you protect your data. The answer is using a Raid setup. Raid needs additional hardware support with a bit technical knowhow. If you had purchased a system with raid control them it will be complicated for you to reformat your system.

This issue lies with an individual. In a small size business, adding up an extra file server for data protection is never recommended. Small companies never think about investing a good amount is setting up powerful IT infrastructure. This does not mean that they are safe. There are possibilities when your system might crash due to virus or hardware failure. At that time Data Recovery services cost is quiet high and companies have to pay at any cost. There is an easier alternative for the same. Switching to Windows 8. Microsoft added a new feature in Windows 8. This is called as Windows 8 Storage Space. This is quiet similar to RAID setup. In RAID there is a dedicated drive. This drive is configured in such way that it creates a backup of your entire data automatically. There are different forms of RAID setup. One among them is mirror. Mirror partition creates the exact copy of your data when you save or modify them. So you do not need to go with third party backup software. This saves your time and RAID is a powerful Data Backup technology.

But RAID setup systems are costlier. With your existing extra hard drive you can create a drive pool which work similar to RAID. Windows 8 Storage Space helps users to keep a data backup on a separate partition. So in case if there is a hardware failure you can recover the same instantly. The setup and configuration of Windows 8 Storage Space is very easy. You just need to add some extra hard drive in your system and configure them as deducted pool drive. Windows 8 Storage Space brings data security in your desktop. This is cost effective for users who want a secure data safety solution. The last option that I found in Windows 7 related to Data security was Backup and Bitlocker. There was none other advance features other than this which can help you. Investing in Data Backup software is another additional cost. Now what really matter here to discuss that whether Windows 8 Storage Space is reliable or not. What features does it offer you. Compared to RAID does Windows 8 storage space have many benefits. The answer to all of them is yes. Windows 8 Storage Space gives you a virtual RAID setup. The management is very simple.

There are less chances of data corruption here. Data can be recovered very easily through this. I can explain the working process of Windows 8 Storage Space through a sample. Assume that you are having a computer with 3 different hard drives. Among them one is of 160GB and one is 250GB and the last one is of 500GB. So the total Storage Space of your computer is 160+250+500=910GB. This is the actual total storage space. Now Windows is installed in 160GB Hard drive which has further two partitions of 80GB each. The other two hard drives are formatted and used as single partition. With Windows 8 Storage Space you can merge the extra two hard drives and create a single partition of 250+500=750GB. In My Computer you can see this storage space as Windows 8 Storage Space partition. At the time of creating a Pool Space you have to specify the type of data backup you need. There are two options here mirror and parity. The mirror generates a similar copy of your data while parity keeps the same hidden. In RAID when a drive is assigned to as mirrored you cannot use the same for data copy paste. While Windows 8 Storage Space allows you to use the empty space also. With the increasing demand it has been important to have such feature. You cannot rely on software or go for costly devices. Windows 8 Storage Space makes your job easier for comfortable data backup.

Options available for Storage Space :

It is very simply to create a Windows 8 Storage Space. It looks simply like created new partition from a hard drive. It worked on the software level giving you a simple and clean interface. You can assign a different letter to the storage space which in visible in My Computer. While RAID is different and complicated. I am not saying that Windows 8 Storage Space is better, but easier. RAID on the other hand is complex and robust. Anyhow you had an option to utilize your extra partition for protecting your data. You do not need to much worry about data failure now. When you create a Pool space there are three option that you can go for. The first one is Two way Mirror. Under this data is written on both the drive. The more data you add the large space is consume on the separate partition. When somehow your Windows disk fails you can rebuild that data from other partition. So in short your data is copy pasted in two partitions. One is the primary location and other is Pool space which combination of different hard drives.

The second option here is Three way mirrors. When you choose this option you can store your data in three locations. So if two drives fail still there are maximum chances to get them all. Three way mirrors is recommended for those who have higher hard drive space or extra drive in their system. The last option is by Parity. This method is bit not recommended as it put heavy impact on your disk performance. You might notice a slow system if you create your data backup process by enabling parity. Parity is a process which ensures that there is no error while copy data. It needs an additional hard drive also as it does not work on your existing partition. This process has a robust option to protect your system against Data loss but quiet not recommended if you need better performance. So you can see all this three options are enough cool to give you mental satisfaction. This is the first time we are going to use a software level raid protection integrated inside Windows. It works on ample of drive and does not need specific models only. Below is detailed process of creating Windows 8 Storage Space.

Risk involved in Windows 8 Storage Space :

To create a Storage Space you have to completely format your existing hard drive. After a successful format only you can merge them together to make a single space. Second when you are deleting a Pool Space does not panic. Depending on the size or data you have it takes time to review the Storage Space partition and restore your old drive as it was before. Somehow if you find that the system freezes do not touch it. Deleting Pool Space sometime is a time consuming process. Other than this there is no major risk involved. Because on creation and deletion your drives are formatted completely. You can also create the same through an usb drive. Ensure that you leave space for the data backup process. Hooking an external portable drive on the same can be more helpful to some extent.

Steps to Create a Windows 8 Storage Space

The process is simple. I will recommend you to keep an extra drives read for the same. I had given the steps below with images so that you can find the process much easier. When you upgrade to Windows 8 then some additional options are listed inside Control Panel. You can find Storage Space inside it. You can also type the same in top right search box to locate the same more easily.

    1. Go in Control Panel > System and Security > Storage Space > Create a Storage Pool

On this page you can see all the drives listed. There is small checkbox on the left side. When you tick on the same the drive is selected for new volume. You can see the type of drive with partition name assigned to it. If the drive is external then you can see a text written "Attached via USB". Next to that is the Disk number and the last column shows you the files inside the drive. If you click on Take Offline the drive will disappear from the list. Choose the appropriate drive you want and then click on Create Pool. Wait for a while until the too calculate the total storage space and show more options ahead.

The next window which you will see will give you the following options : Select a name, resiliency type, and size of the storage space. At this point you have to define proper settings. The first section is the drive name and below that is drive letter. Then comes the Resiliency type where you can choose from Two Way Mirror, Three Way Mirror and Parity. The last part shows you the size which reflects the maximum Pool Capacity. This will be created when the process is over. You can add a Logical Size to reduce the size and create another volume for your need. Once you are confirmed with all the settings click on Create Storage Space.

Once done open My Computer. You can see a dedicated partition listed with drive space and the name/drive letter you had assigned. The Storage Space screen inside Control Panel > System and Security > Storage gives you a complete information on total pool space and your existing physical drive.
