Windows XP and Windows Vista Slipstreaming

Remember that this article is based for an user benefit to use this License copy of Windows for Easy Installation. It helps to avoid driver and other application installation and make your job much easier. But remember that distributing any Windows CD, sharing disc, is illegal. It is an commercial product and everyone must user a License Windows Copy. Slipstreaming Windows is just an easy method of Windows Installation.

I found myself having to work several times to reinstall Windows XP on your PC to different customers. The situation is not per se but cumbersome, having to proceed once the installation is finished to complement the Sp2 (3 / 4 of the clients had bought the CD before SP2) is a big waste of time, especially if the PCs are more than one. So I had to 'carry out a "Slipstream" of Windows XP in order to save precious time.

    Windows XP SP1 Slipstream
    • The idea is to create a disc that will present few peculiarities:
    • The disc will be bootable.
    • The installation process will automatically.
    • The latest Service Pack and all available updates will be integrated.
    • Components and applications of your choice will be installed.
    • The drivers necessary for the proper functioning of your peripherals will be preinstalled.
    • A number of registry settings have been changed.

Of course, this list is not exhaustive! Note also that the installation process requires that he be made completely safe so that all updates have been made even before you make your first steps on the Web. Otherwise, the probability that in the few seconds following a Trojan is installed in the heart of your system is very high! Also, if you are under the obligation of having to reinstall your system throughout the long process of downloading updates and reinstalling applications will be greatly accelerated.

It is possible to create an installable version of Windows XP, as was the case with Windows 2000, directly integrating the latest service pack, this process is called Slipstreaming. Service Pack 2 incorporates many new features and capabilities is a major version of Windows. For this reason, many people will want to install this version directly the next time they install Windows XP, and thus gain the time needed to install the service pack.

The Slipstreaming was created by Microsoft when the company sought an elegant way of integrating service packs and various patches, so customers could always maintain an updated version and install it as well on new machines. For users on Slipstreaming is also interesting because, for example, you can copy the contents of your Windows XP CD to your hard drive, files incorporate Service Pack 2 and then rewrite it on a CD. This then gives you a bootable copy of Windows XP, as we shall see later.

The Slipstreaming is not limited to service packs, you can also integrate software updates and various hot-fixes. So let's see how to create this CD.

    The installation process:

Here is a brief summary of key steps:

    1) Install in text mode:
    • Load drivers.
    • Copy the necessary files into memory.
    • Copy the contents of the directory $ OEM $.
    • First reboot.

    2) Installation in GUI mode (time remaining: 39 minutes):
    • Install drivers.
    • Installation of the network.
    • Install menu.
    • Registration of components.
    • Execution of the instructions contained in the file Svcpack.inf (remaining time: 13 minutes).
    • Execution of the instructions contained in the file cmdlines.txt (remaining time: 12 minutes).
    • Execution of commands in the section [SetupParams] File winnt.sif (Time remaining: 9 minutes).
    • Remove temporary files and restart the computer.

    3) First login:
    • Loading personal settings.
    • Execution of the instructions contained in the [GuiRunOnce] file winnt.sif and RunOnceEx registry key.
    • Load the Windows desktop.

Re: Windows XP and Windows Vista Slipstreaming

    Steps :

First take your CD of Windows XP Home or Professional edition and copy it to your hard drive, it must of course be a full version. We will create a directory in the root of this drive F: and you call WinXP (F: \ WinXP). Then you make a Drag and Drop the contents of the CD in E: \ WinXP.

You must have the "Network Installation Package for Windows XP Service Pack 2 for IT Professionals and Developers" of 261 MB you can download from the site of Microsoft . The filename of the downloaded version is WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe but you will rename it for convenience in WinXPSP2.exe. You then create our F: drive directory WinXPSP2 where we copy our file WinXPSP2.exe

Mode Command Prompt , you will listen WinXPSP2.exe your file! To access it using Start, then Run, and enter cmdand then use [Enter], below we access the F: drive and then to our directory WinXPSP2

If we enter WinXPSP2 /? The program after a few seconds a window opens that displays the various switches available.

You will then enter the command:
    • WinXPSP2.exe / integrate: F: \ WinXP [Enter]
    • The files will then be extracted to a temporary directory.
    • The wizard Installing Service Pack 2 starts up and then copy the files in the directory F: \ WinXP.
    • The contents of your F: \ WinXP should look like this and you will find in your Windows installation directory file spslpsrm.log that gives you a detailed account of the integration that has been done with its possible error messages.

Extract the file to make bootable CD

Before burning our CD, it is necessary to extract the installation CD of Windows XP a hidden file that will help make our bootable CD. For this we use the shareware IsoBuster available from Smart Projects . After installing, use one of its features free, unless you bought it, which would not be a bad idea, given all the opportunities it offers.

After opening IsoBuster, if your CD into your drive, Bootable CD in the directory, you should see a file called Microsoft Corporation.img or with a similar name with an extension of img. This is the file we need. Using a right click, choose Extract Microsoft Corporation.img. When IsoBuster opens the dialog box to retrieve the file, put it where it offers to save, either in the root C:. Now you can leave IsoBuster.

Creating a Bootable CD of Windows XP Service Pack 2 Nero Burning ROM 6
    • First, notice the volume label of the CD (mine was WXPFPP_FR, but yours will probably differ). Put a CD-R or CD-RW into your drive and launch Nero Burning ROM.
    • Select CD-ROM (Boot) from the New Compilation Page.
    • Then, under Source of data for the Bootable Image choose Image File and select C: \ Microsoft Corporation.img by clicking the Browse button.
    • Select the option labeled Options DEA (only for advanced users!) And change Kind of emulation to No Emulation.
    • Change Number of sectors read through 4.
    • The option Read segment of sectors (hex) should remain 07C0.
    • When all these steps are completed, the window of Nero Burning ROM
    • Then select the tab Label. For "Disc Name" put the volume on your CD (WXPFPP_FR in my case). Your window.
    • Then click the New button, after the Drag and Drop the contents of the file F: \ .
    • You just have to start burning your CD!
    • Thinking check "Finalize CD" then click the Burn button.

Test the bootable CD of Windows XP Service Pack 2!

You have created the CD, you must test it. Depending on the environment you use, it will automatically boot or you'll get a message asking if you want to boot it. Then check that the version you have installed is Windows XP Service Pack 2, check it, do Start, Run, then type Winver, the following dialog box will appear.

    Windows Vista

Unfortunately, the Service Pack 1 of Windows Vista does not allow the execution of this operation. In fact, Microsoft does not provide the ability to update the DVD of Vista to Service Pack 1 via an automated procedure. Slipstream of XP SP3 from the CD of Windows XP SP1 or SP2 it is possible. The process of slipstreaming have to be performed inside a machine with Windows XP and not on a system running Windows Vista.

Start by creating a folder to copy all the files of the original CD. In our example we will use the path c: \ XPSP3. After copying all the files on the CD in this position, save the executable to another folder Service Pack 3 (other than above), for example c: \. The name of the file that serves our purpose (i.e., the Network Installation Package for Windows XP Service Pack 3 for IT Professionals and Developers) is for the Italian language, WindowsXP-kb936929-sp3-x86-ENU.EXE.

    Before Installation
