List of Error codes generated by Device Manager in Windows XP

In Windows XP, when you double-click a device malfunctioning (it is sometimes found in the Device Manager with an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle), an error code may appear. Here is the list and the significance of these errors.

Error codes generated by Device Manager

    •Code 1
This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)
This device has no drivers installed or is configured incorrectly. Update the drivers or by clicking Update Driver. The Update Wizard starts the Hardware. If updating the driver does not work, consult the hardware documentation for more information.

    •Code 3
The driver for this device might be corrupted, or the level of available memory or other resources on your computer is too low. (Code 3)
If the driver is corrupted, uninstall and then scan for new hardware to reinstall the driver. To search for new hardware, click the Action menu in Device Manager, then select Search for hardware changes.
If the computer has insufficient memory to run the device, try to close some applications to make memory available. To check memory and system resources, click the right mouse button on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, then click Settings in the Performance field.
It may need to install additional RAM memory (RAM). On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

    •Code 10
If the hardware key device contains the value FailReasonString, this string appears in the error message. The driver or enumerator places this string value registry at this location. If the hardware key contains no value FailReasonString, the following error message appears:
This device can not start. (Code 10)
Failed to start this device. Click Update Driver to update the drivers for this device. On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

    •Code 12
This device can not find enough free resources for its operation. If you want to use it, you should disable any other devices on this system. (Code 12)
The same ports I / O, the same interrupt, or the same access channel direct memory access (by the BIOS, operating system or a combination of both) were assigned to two devices. This error message may also appear if the BIOS did not allocate enough resources to the device (for example, if a USB controller is not an interrupt from the BIOS because of a MPS table (Multiprocessor System) is damaged).
Use Device Manager to determine where the conflict is and disable the conflicting device. On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

    •Code 14
This device will not work properly until you restart your computer. (Code 14)
    Restart the computer.

    •Code 16

The device is only partially configured.
To specify additional resources for this device, click the Resources tab in Device Manager. If a question is located next to a resource in the resource assigned to the device, select that resource to assign to the device. If the resource can not be changed, click Change settings. If Change Settings is unavailable, try to disable the check box Use automatic settings to make it available. If this is not a Plug and Play, see the hardware documentation for more information.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.
Click Uninstall, then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then select Last Known Good Configuration. The computer returns to the last successful registry configuration.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard. If the driver is required and if reinstalling or upgrading does not change the startup type in the registry by using Registry Editor.

    •Code 33
