Hello All This guide will teach you how to install phpBB3 on your website. What is phpBB3? phpB has become the most widely used Open Source forum solution. Like its predecessors, phpBB 3.0 “Olympus” has an easy to use administration panel and a user friendly installation process, which allows you to have a forum set up in minutes.
With a large and highly customizable set of key features coupled with a standards compliant interface, phpBB will grow with, and complement your website. With millions of installations worldwide, it is no wonder phpBB is one of the most popular ways to create and support a community.
Download the latest phpBB version : phpBB3
Now extract the contents of the zip file to a folder and upload the extracted content to the root of your publicly visible web folder, generally it is /public_html/ Now you need to create a database which you will use to save the forum's contents like usernames, posts, etc. Create a database and remember your server, username, password and database name. You will need these while installing phpBB3 on your website.
I will assume the the server is 'localhost', id and password need not be assumed and database name will be assumed as 'phpbb'. Ok, now lets install phpBB.
Open any web browser and got the the web address of your website. Now you will get the following screen This is an Introduction Page, where you can gain some information and then continue with the phpBB3 installation. Now click on the Install tab from the top-left corner. You will be now start installing phpBB3. Installer will welcome you. Read the requirements and click on the bottom button which says "Proceed to Next Step".
Once you clicked on "Proceed to Next Step", you will getto the following screen where phpBB3 will check if your web server is configured and has all the necessary components. Now once the system check is done, you will start the installation by clicking on "Start Install" which is located at the bottom of the web page.
Now on clicking "Start Install", you will need to provide with the database settings for the installation to configure phpBB3 for your site. Fill all the details correctly which includes, Database server hostname which is generally 'localhost, database port number default is 3306, database name, username, password and prefix for tables that phpBB3 will create.
Now click on "Proceed to Next Step" and you will get to the following page. Now on clicking next phpBB3 setup wizard will check the connection with the database and show you the result. If you have entered correct database entries, you will presented with the above Screen.
Click on "Proceed to Next Step". Now on the following page, you will need to setup and Admin account for your phpBB3 forum which you are installing. On this page, fill in the details correctly as this is the main account which will let you manage everything on your forum. Now once you have filled in the necessary details click on "Proceed to Next Step".
Then you should see the following page. This page is shown when your admin account is setup properly and you are ready to proceed, Now again click on "Proceed to Next Step" and you will get to the following page. This page tells you that the wizard has finished writing some configuration files and it have finished.
Now again click on "Proceed to Next Step" and you will reach the advance settings and configurations page. Now check if the settings which are shown by default is correct and change whichever settings needs to be changed.
Now again click on "Proceed to Next Step" and you will get the following page. This page tells you that all the necessary details that are needed to be updated in the database for phpBB3 to function has be done and now you can click on "Proceed to Next Step".
Then you will get to the next page. This page will congratulate you for successful installation of phpBB3 on your site and now you can proceed by clicking on the Login button. When you click on it, you will be take to the the phpBB3's admin control panel. You can modify and configure your forums according to your needs from this page. Now you can start creating categories and forums from this page or click onBoard Index to see how your webpage looks like.
The Board Index link is located at the extreme top-right corner of the page. Hope this is helpful...
