    How to Recover Password For LocalDirector

    Introduction
    This document describes how to recover a password on a Cisco LocalDirector 417.


    Requirements
    To perform this password recovery procedure, first download the unlock file from the Downloads (registered customers only) . Users also will need the following items:


    A different unlock file is required for the LocalDirector 417.

    • PC with MS-DOS
    • One formatted 1.44 MB floppy disk


    To use the procedure described in this document, you must be a registered user. You must be logged in to use the rawrite.exe and unlock3001.bin files.

    Note: When working in DOS, rename the downloaded unlock3001.bin file to a valid DOS 8.3 filename. For example: unlock3.bin.

    Step-by-Step Procedures

    LocalDirector 417 with a Floppy Drive


    1. When using a system with a floppy disk drive, follow the steps below.
    2. On your PC, copy the rawrite.exe and unlock3001.bin files listed above into the same directory and go to that directory.
    3. Execute the rawrite.exe file on your PC.
    4. At the Enter Source File Name prompt, type unlock3001.bin.
    5. At the Destination Drive prompt, type the drive letter for your floppy disk drive.
    6. Insert a formatted 1.44 MB floppy disk into this drive. The image file will be copied onto the disk.
    7. Remove the disk from the PC disk drive and insert it into the LocalDirector 417's floppy disk drive.
    8. Reboot the LocalDirector 417. The following message will be displayed:

      PIX Bios V2.7
      Booting Floppy
      ...................................Execing flop
      FAST Floppy loader version 1.09

      Reading floppy image........Done
      32MB RAM
      Flash=i28F020
      unlock 1.1
      Copyright (c) 1996 by Cisco Systems, Inc.

      Password cleared -- remove floppy and reboot.
    9. Remove the disk and reboot the LocalDirector 417 again.

    LocalDirector 417 (no Floppy Drive)

    Without a floppy disk drive, follow the steps below.

    Note: A different unlock file is required for the LocalDirector 417. Follow the steps listed below once the file is downloaded.

    1. Install a serial terminal or a PC with terminal emulation software on the LocalDirector 417 console port.

    2. Verify a connection with LocalDirector 417. This displays the following information:
      Initializing memory. Please wait.
      Cisco Local Director 417: Selected Console.

      BIOS Version: LD417 06.21
      BIOS Build date: 09/18/00

      Cisco Local Director Booting From Flash.

      LocalDirector 417 Flash loader

      loading from flash. . .

    3. Enter the break sequence <ESC> <ESC> <Ctrl-B> during the progression of ellipses (...) after the console displays the message Boot Loader Version x.x.x.x. The following information should be displayed:

    4. Enter a question mark (?) to see a listing of the available commands.

    5. Specify the speed and duplex settings for interface 0 by issuing the interface ethernet command, as shown below.
      boot> interface ethernet 0 100full

    6. Specify the IP address of the LocalDirector 417 interface 0 by issuing the ip address command, as shown below.
      boot> ip address 161.44.220.151 255.255.255.0

    7. Make sure that the TFTP server with the unlock image is directly accessible (that is, no routers, same VLAN on switch, and so on) to LocalDirector 417 by way of interface 0.


      Note: Interface 0 is the only functioning interface within the boot loader on LocalDirector 417.

    8. Verify the network path to the TFTP server by issuing the ping command to receive a response from the TFTP server, as shown below.
      boot> ping 161.44.220.81
      161.44.220.81 response received -- 0ms
      161.44.220.81 response received -- 0ms
      161.44.220.81 response received -- 0ms
      If the ping command fails, restore access to the TFTP server before continuing.

    9. Download the password unlock file by issuing the tftp command, as shown below.
      boot> tftp unlock3002 161.44.220.81


      The following message is displayed: confirm boot [N]:

    10. Enter Y to confirm the boot. The following information is displayed:

      image was successfully copies to RAM
      trying to write image to flash. . .
      saving config from flash

      Burning image into flash. . .
      Saving config. . .writing the config to flash
      The following message is displayed: Confirm reboot on new image [N]:

    11. Enter Y to confirm the reboot.

    12. Press any key. As the password recovery file loads, the following information is displayed:
      unlock 3.0.0.2

    19. Enter Y to confirm the boot. The following information is displayed:

    21. Enter enable at the localdirector> prompt.

    22. Press the Enter key to send a blank password at the Password: prompt since it has been cleared by the unlock utility. After pressing Enter to send a blank password, users should see the enabled LocalDirector 417 prompt, as shown below.
