How to access the computer running Windows 7 without fixed IP

To apply some new features in Windows 7, you should be able to access your computer from anywhere on the Internet. Since most Internet users use broadband connection, they do not have a fixed IP address but a dynamic address that changes everytime. Here are the steps to access your computer from anywhere using the Internet

Accessing your computer from the Internet

On Internet, any connected machine is identified by a unique IP address. Some computers like the servers have fixed IP address whereas others use dynamic IP address. The later one gets a new IP each time they connect to the Internet.

Since IP addresses are not easy to remember, WWW.DYNDNS.ORG service is a service designed for users that have dynamic IP addresses. This service assigns you a free domain name and then allows to trace the changes in your dynamic IP so that the chosen domain name always point to your machine even if its IP changes with time.

The process involves 3 basic steps:

    - Create an account on DynDNS.COM
    - Setting a DynDNS account and choose your domain name
    - Setting the Router or the computer

    Setting your computer or router

We must now learn to use DNS to recognize you and track your IP address. Two cases:

CASE 1: You are connected to the Internet via a router or a switch, etc.

In this case, you must set your router to indicate changes to IP DynDNS. The method varies depending on the router, but still very similar in all cases.
    • Connect to the interface settings of your device(usually 192.168.1.1)
    • In the setup menu (or Advanced Configuration) find an entry called DDNS or Dynamic DNS, or DNS DynDNS or Dynamic.
    • Select the service DynDNS.org or DynDNS.com generally in the list proposed
    • Enter your domain name as defined in previous post
    • Enter your username and password for DynDNS
    • Confirm the changes. The system is operational.

CASE 2: You are connected to the Internet via a modem.

In this case, you have to install a small utility on your machine:
    • Download the DynDNS Updater software.
    • Run the installation by following the wizard: Click Next, then I Agree, then Next, then Next, then Install and then click Finish.
    • The software automatically launches and asks you the address of your account
    • Enter your username and password of DynDNS
    • The list of domains associated with your account. Mark all those to be connected to this machine and click Apply.

There is no options of "Auto detect IP address" too.
    Will this be a problem?

Another question, my modem is integrated modem/router from Verizon. What do I do? How do I connect to the interface settings?

    Thank you.

Although you have modem/router, you can still follow the procedure in CASE 1: You are connected to the Internet via a router or a switch, etc. . Simply follow the steps described by EricTheRed. I hope it will help.
