How to create your own website with Google ?

You want to create a website for your club, your association or simply for your family and friends? Why not try Google Sites? This new service of Google not only hosts your site for free on Internet, but also offers a plethora of tools to create, add and modify it with ease!


Step 1: Before you start ...

Google Sites is a new free service from Google, which complements the range of services already available: GMail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Reader, etc.. You can create very simply and in a few clicks your own website ... Better yet, Google not only helps you create, but also provides you with a free hosting!

To use this service, you obviously need a Google Account, which necessarily if you use GMail or accommodation photos via Picasa.

• Launch your Web browser (for this presentation we will use Google Chrome, but you can use IE7, IE8, Firefox or another browser intelligent).
  
• Go to: sites.google.com
  
• If necessary (particularly the first time), log in to Google Account by entering the email address and password of your Google account (used for GMail, for example).
  
• Click Connect
  
• If you have not yet created a site, the page displays a large button Create a Site. Click it and go to the next step.

Step 2: Ask the foundations of the site

Immediately, you will enter the heart of the matter. We will have to return the fundamental characteristics of your site and to define a look.

• In Site Name, enter the name of your site.
  
• Please note that Google will automatically generate the URL with the standards of which will be naming this site (it removes all spaces, accented characters, symbols and signs). Note the URL generated. It will look like http://sites.google.com/site/MyNameWebsite. It is this URL that your friends will take to reach your site.
  
• Then a description of your site. It is optional, but it is strongly recommended to take the time to write one, it will be used by the Google search engine to rank your site and allow users to access the search function.
  
• You must then specify if your site is "Public" or if it is intended for adult audiences (he talks about sex, violence, war, weapons, etc.). Do not cheat! Or you could be banned permanently deleted and your site. If your site is actually intended for adult audiences, click the "Adult content".
  
• You must then determine if your site is accessible to any Internet user (option Everyone) or only a list of people you will set later (option Only people I choose). Note that you can change this setting later. You can start by building a site reserved for a closed circle of friends and family (who should identify themselves), then later, if the site please change this setting to make it public.
  
• Finally, you should choose a look. By default, 3 looks are available: Blue, White Simple, Coal. Other topics are available by clicking More themes.

Before confirming this, you must enter the code displayed with garbled characters. This is a protection code to prevent hackers using bots to create fake Web servers and saturate Google.

Once the code is entered, click the Create a site button to create the Web site. Then go to the next step ...

Step 3: Create the home page

Your site is now created. We just have to give it content. Initially, the site contains a very simple tree: a simple home page.

We'll see how to enrich. But first, let's take a look in the settings page to change certain elements:

• Click More Actions
• Select Settings page
• Uncheck "Allow attachments"
• Uncheck "Allow comments" (in a general way, there is no reason that visitors have to comment on a homepage).
• Click Save.

Taking the issue itself ...

• Click Edit page
  
• Enter a welcome message in the main area
  
• The different functions of layout of the text are similar to a word processor. You can change the font, the size to vary (feel free to use the styles of the Format menu for a good consistency and a good listing in Google search), bold or underline text, etc.
  
• Note that the Layout option allows you to opt for a presentation on a single column or two columns.
  
• Do not hesitate to build a site by incorporating visual graphics! The Insert menu allows you to import the page into different elements such as images, but also a Google calendar, office documents stored in Google Docs, Picasa slideshows, YouTube videos, etc..
  
• Click on Save to save the changes.

Step 4: Add more pages to your site

Obviously, your site will not be limited to a simple home page ... We will see how to create other pages.

• Click on Create a new page.
  
• Give it a name (again, Google generates a name of standard Web page based on your input)
  
• Then choose a page template.
  For the moment the system offers five types of pages:
  
  • The classic pages, similar to the home page
  • The pages Scoreboard composed of Google gadgets of your choice
  • Pages ads, similar to blogs, very handy for a Topic News/News
  • Class pages, very useful for sharing files between friends or work colleagues
  • Lists pages that are 4 types: To do, to solve problems, Project Steps, Custom Lists.
    The pages ads and classic pages will be used mainly for news sites.
    List pages and Class pages - Project steps are very useful for an intranet site or a site about a collaborative project.
• You must define how the site will be arranged, i.e. the tree. For each page created, you must determine if it is at the root level or in a particular category.
  
• Click on the Create Page button to confirm the selection.
  
• Once the template page created, all that remains is to edit it with the same tools as the home page by clicking Edit Page.

Step 5: Adjust the sidebar

Your site is almost ready. We just have to work the tree and the sidebar.

• Click Edit Sidebar
  
• Note that you can delete the "Recent Activity on the site.
  
• Note that you can Add an item to the sidebar. The elements that can add are: a text block, a block "My recent activities" (for the user logged in) and a block "Count" (which count the days until a given date).
  
• To change an item, click on Edit. Typically, you always want to enrich the navigation with the new pages and sections you have created. So click on the Edit link of the Navigation pad.
  
• Then click on Add a page to the navigation area of the sidebar, then choose the page to display in the list of pages you have created.
  
• Confirm with OK
  
• Finally, click Save Changes.

Step 6: Visit your website ...

This is your first site operational. We just have to visit! It's easy ...

• Open a new browser window
  
• Enter the URL of your site: sites.google.com/site/MyNameWebsite
  
• If Google has automatically recognized and placed in "publishing", click the Disconnect button in the top right and return to the URL of your site.
