How to Choose a Digital Camera

There are three types of digital camera: compact, bridge and reflex.

The compact has a small box. Some "ultra-compact" exist, their design is often more successful, but they are generally less efficient. Price: 100 to 500 euros.

The bridge is distinguished by its compact, very powerful zoom, but bulky, integrated housing. Price: 250 to 700 euros.

The reflex has two distinct elements: the housing and the goal. It is possible to adapt to multiple objectives boxes depending on the subject or shooting distance. This modularity greatly improves the rendering of photography. Price: 600 to 6000 euros for a box.

Before any purchase, ask yourself a fundamental question: What will you use your device? This is the criterion for choosing priority.

Compact, bridge or reflex: what to use?

    Mobile: holidays, souvenirs, family
The criteria for handling, portability and ergonomics are essential fluid. The compact, small, lends itself well to tourism, in a crowd. You can easily get out of his holster and then storing. The setting is minimum required by this type of device and you will not miss any of your holiday (beginner level). Limited pixels in a few years ago, the compacts are now highly competitive.

    Semi-nomadic excursions, family celebrations
The bridge, a little larger, with a record of better quality, well suited to family celebrations (marriage, baptism) and the escapades of a day. Think that over several days, a camera, even light, eventually becoming unwieldy. It is quite easy to use (intermediate level).

    "Resident": Photography dedicated composition
The motivation is that a better rendering aesthetic or artistic (landscapes, subjects in motion). The reflex lends itself better to those conditions of shooting. Its use is limited in time because of its lack of maneuverability. A higher degree of control features of the device is required (expert level).

Printing and expansion / viewing screen?
If you plan to view your photos on a computer screen, compact and bridge provide renderings quite honest. Opt instead for the bridge if you print your photos occasionally. If you wear a particular attention to the quality printing, a reflex camera is well suited: better depth of field, lack of grain, opportunities for expansion without pixellisation.

    The technical criteria

Number of pixels. Criterion often regarded as decisive. It is less and less thanks to advances in compact cameras in this area. Aspect important to feel when expanding a photo or a detail.

Screen and the viewfinder. The LCD screen has replaced the optical viewfinder on compact cameras. In bright sunshine, it is difficult to be relied upon to frame his photos (unreadable). If you framing seems important, prefer a "bridge". It has a mini screen more readable if the sun (but less precise).

Objective. It must have a zoom sufficient to allow for successful shooting in any situation. For large frames (photos of people, landscapes), be attentive to the presence of a wide-angle or a super-angle on the goal.

Stabilizer. It corrects shaking photos for a reported net. Present on the majority of devices.

Storage of images. 4 types of cards exist. Please check compatibility with your device. Storage Capacities greater or lesser degree. For shooting burst, check the write speed of the card.

Speed. Time that the device takes to light up and take the picture from the moment you press the shutter. A check for use.

Assistance shooting. The device calculates just the type of subject photographed (portrait, landscape) and regulates the development and exposure.

    The Graphics Criteria

Respect colors, the sensitivity of the device to light (for the operation of the auto-focus), the power of flash are important parameters. These characteristics are generally provided on the detailed evaluation of the aircraft. It is difficult to obtain optimal performance for each parameter. Choose according to its priorities for use.

    Computer and peripheral
Check the capacity of your hard disk (storage) for your photos. The graphics cards easiest good enough today to display photos and videos. For retouching, some very heavy software as Photoshop, requires a good memory, at least 512 MB.
