| IT Contractors becoming employees
Hi All, I am a Human Resource and Benefits Professional and have been contracted by a large public employer in Canada to review their current complement of IT Contractors. The situation is that the demands of the IT area has grown over the years and the organization has responded to the increased workload by bringing on contractors to supplement the permanent staff. This was initially to respond to project work, however, the work has morphed into maintenance and ongoing serivcing. As a result, many of the contractors have been providing services for months and even years and are on open ended or renewable contracts. The employer recognises a business risk in this structure and now wants to identify those positions that should be classified as properly being filled by permament employees and, in order to retain the acquired knowledge of the contractors, the employer also wants to identify the contractors who would be interested in changing their status and remaining as permanent employees. In the transition process, the employer does not want to experience a reduction in quality of service or productivity. Any suggestions on how to frame the interview process with the contractors and what questions should be asked? Thanks |

The doubt that whether the contractor will be working with same sincerity or not if he is promoted as an employee will always remain there for every contractor. The fact that the candidate has become secured with the job as a permanent employee can make the contractor less responsible. The responsibility when they are contractors is more due to the fact that they are 'Contractor' and need to main their contract. The best you can do is as them many different questions, probably give them some practical test, and through that track their sincerity as best as you can and read their mind. Now that depends on your skills ![]()
