Which type of studies are best recommended to join Civil Services

I have completed my graduation in commerce and I am willing join Indian Civil Services. I have heard that I have to clear Civil Services Exam conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). I wanted to know studies that are recommended to join Civil Services? I have done commerce and my friends say that it is not recommended?? Is it so?? Other than this I wanted to know the Eligibility for Civil Services. I am aware of services like Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) but I wanted to know the services that are offered other than these after giving the Civil Services Examination (CSE)?? Is there anyone who has idea about all these and can guide me for the same??

I don’t think there is any study which is recommended to join Civil Services and that’s what the eligibility says as well. You just need to have degree of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India. Candidates who have appeared for the qualifying examination and are waiting for their results can also appear for Preliminary Examination. There are two successive stages of Civil Services Examination, one is Civil Services Main Examination which consist of written examination and Interviews where as other is Civil Services Preliminary Examination. This Civil Services Preliminary Examination consist Objective type question and it is an exam for qualifying for Civil Services Main Examination. Preliminary Examination includes 2 papers carrying 400 marks in total. Both papers are compulsory and are offered in Hindi and English with two hours duration. Once you are declared by Commission for qualifying Preliminary Examination you are eligible for admission to the Main Examination (same year).

Yes the age limit should be between 21 to 30 years on 1st August of the year he/she might be appearing for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination. There are other constraints regarding Nationality as well. One needs to be a citizen of India if he/she is going for Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service. As far as the subjects in UPSC Prelims Exam are concerned they are as followed:

Indian and World Geography.
